Product Notice
HPS Pharmacies wish to advise that Sanofi is updating the presentation of Clexane® pre-filled syringes to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries. All strengths of Clexane® pre-filled syringes will be replaced by Clexane® pre-filled syringes with an automatic safety lock system as shown below.

Figure 2. New Clexane® pre-filled syringe with automatic safety lock
Sanofi has advised that the new Clexane® pre-filled syringes with automatic safety lock will be listed on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from 1st November 2019. Supplies of this presentation are expected to begin arriving in mid-November 2019.
The new devices are presented in a larger sized box with the procedure for use printed on the back of the pack. The procedure for administration is the same until the syringe has been removed from the patient following dose administration. Following injection:
- Remove needle from patient by pulling it straight out;
- Keep finger on the plunger;
- Face the needle away from yourself and others and activate the safety lock by firmly pushing the plunger;
- You will hear an audible click as the protective sleeve automatically covers the needle; and
- Dispose of syringe in the usual manner.
It is important to note that it is only the device and the size of the box that has changed. There has been no change to the formulation, indications, dosage, product information, or pack insert. Graduated markings also remain on strengths 60mg and above. While the size of the box is larger, the number of syringes per box remains the same at ten. The packaging also retains the same distinctive colours to facilitate strength identification.
Healthcare professionals can access a range of training materials on the Sanofi portal located at www.mysanoficonnect.com.au. Directions for access to information appropriate for patients and carers can also be found on this site.
Retain this notice in a prominent position, including in other related business units for one month. Report any problems identified with medicines, vaccines or medical devices to the TGA.
