Emergency and acute healthcare staff will welcome the new presentations of Isuprel® (isoprenaline hydrochloride) ampoules, which no longer requires long-term refrigeration. Removal of sodium metabisulphite will also reduce the risk of adverse reactions.

Both formulations have been in distribution since April 2014, and most wholesale suppliers have now exhausted the old formulation. HPS Pharmacies advise that all supplies, including emergency trolleys, should be reviewed and storage conditions adjusted to suit the presentation currently in stock, as tabulated below.

Indications are unchanged for the use of this sympathomimetic amine to increase the strength and rate of heart beats during cardiac arrest, heart block and Adams-Stokes attacks which are not due to ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation. It is also used to increase cardiac output associated with hypovolaemia, congestive heart failure, and septic or cardiogenic shock, and to relax smooth muscles that cause bronchospasm during anaesthesia.

This notice should be retained in a prominent position including in other related business units as a reminder for all staff members and new deliveries monitored until transition is complete.
