HPS Pharmacies wish to advise that propranolol tablets 10mg, 40mg, and 160mg are unavailable in either the INDERAL (AstraZeneca) or DERALIN (Alphapharm) brands, and that all wholesale supplies have been exhausted.
AstraZeneca has advised HPS Pharmacies that INDERAL is being urgently sourced from international distributors, and that a very limited emergency stock is available for release to critical patients. Further supplies are expected to become available from December 10th 2012.
Alphapharm has advised that new batches of DERALIN will have staggered release dates between December and late January 2013.
It should be remembered that abrupt withdrawal of beta blockers can trigger a rebound effect that may result in angina, increased hypertension, myocardial infarction or ventricular arrhythmias. If it becomes necessary to discontinue propranolol, a medical practitioner should manage a gradual withdrawal over 8 to 14 days, and/or consider prescribing an alternative beta blocker.
Please retain this notice in a prominent position, including other related business units, until supplies return to normal. Should you require further information regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact your pharmacist at HPS Pharmacies or Customer Service at Astra Zeneca on 1800 226 591, or Alphapharm on 1800 274 276.
Information regarding expected dates for supply may vary subject to delays which are out of our control. HPS Pharmacies does not accept responsibility for such changes but will endeavour to keep our clients updated as information is made available from drug manufacturers or wholesalers.
