Further to DrugAlert Volume 369, HPS Pharmacies wish to give notice that Pfizer Australia are now experiencing an interruption to the supply of Pfizer Gentamicin Ampoules as follows:
Pfizer Gentamicin Injection BP
This supply issue is due to the recent recall of a number of batches of gentamicin ampoules. Normal supplies are expected to resume in early November 2017. Please contact your pharmacist for information on alternative formulations that may be available during this time.
Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic with a broad range of clinical indications. Tobramycin has a similar spectrum of activity to gentamicin with slightly more in vitro activity against Pseudomonas spp. However, supplies of tobramycin are also running low due to the sudden unexpected increase in demand. The Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic version 15 also suggests ciprofloxacin may be considered as an alternative to gentamicin for some indications.
It is recommended that an Infectious Diseases physician be consulted for specific recommendations.
Retain this notice in a prominent position, including in other related business units until supplies return to normal. Report any problems identified with medicines, vaccines or medical devices to the TGA.
Should you require further information regarding this matter, please contact your pharmacist at HPS Pharmacies, or Pfizer Australia on 1800 629 921.
Information regarding expected dates for supply may vary subject to delays which are out of our control. HPS Pharmacies does not accept responsibility for such changes but will endeavour to keep our clients updated as information is made available from drug manufacturers or wholesalers.
