Drug Availability Update
Further to DrugAlert Volume 317, HPS Pharmacies wish to give notice that all suppliers of metronidazole for injection registered for use in Australia are continuing to experience a supply interruption. It is unknown when supplies will return to normal.
This is a national issue affecting all levels of the Australian healthcare system, including public and private hospitals. While wholesaler stocks of metronidazole for injection are exhausted, HPS Pharmacies have been able to source a limited supply for the benefit of our clients, however these sources have also now run out.
To ensure supplies are preserved for those in greatest clinical need, the National Centre for Antimicrobial Stewardship provides the following guidance:
- Review all orders for metronidazole and assess appropriateness according to the Therapeutic Guidelines: Antibiotic Version 15, or relevant local guidelines.
- Consider switching to oral therapy.
- Consult with infectious disease physicians for appropriate alternatives.
Retain this notice in a prominent position, including in other related business units until supplies return to normal. Report any problems identified with medicines, vaccines or medical devices to the TGA.
Should you require further information regarding this matter, please contact your pharmacist at HPS Pharmacies.
Information regarding expected dates for supply may vary subject to delays which are out of our control. HPS Pharmacies does not accept responsibility for such changes but will endeavour to keep our clients updated as information is made available from drug manufacturers or wholesalers.
